EPISODE 002: Sobriety Sucks Served Up Sober the podcast

why sobriety sucks

The alleged justification for this is that the process of making NA beverages is as arduous, if not more so, than making real alcohol. But it could also be that people trying to stop drinking are simply so desperate for an alternative that they’re willing to pay a premium for fake booze. All of this is to quench the thirst of the swelling “sober-curious” movement—a growing number of people making an effort to not drink. Interestingly, it’s mostly young people who are doing this—compared to 20 years ago, the number of college-aged Americans who abstain from alcohol is up from 20 to 28 percent. And when I couldn’t seem to get ready in time, or when my purse was a tangle of wadded keys and gum wrappers I felt so bereft. Hi we’re Jack and Meredith and we’re alcoholics.

I don’t regret quitting alcohol, but sobriety isn’t always easy.

why sobriety sucks

It’s crazy, but telling your social circle you don’t drink is sometimes harder than not drinking in the first place. Sobriety is so much more than a decision about your physical health and emotional well-being—it has a huge effect on your social life. And as I found out when I gave up drinking, that doesn’t just mean suffering awkward moments every time you hit a bar with friends. It wasn’t drinking in bars that was my downfall—it was drinking too much, period. It was affecting my relationships, my parenting, my career.

I have 16 months under my belt and this has become a blessing and a curse. Sobriety is so over hyped and addiction is so shitty there has to be a happy medium somewhere? I don’t believe total abstinence from all drugs is the way forward anymore its driving me insane.

  • He didn’t necessarily believe he had an alcohol problem, per se, but since the booze went “hand in hand” with cocaine, Jax decided to do away with both.
  • I also want you to know that it should not be treated lightly, because this boredom can unlock some old behaviors.
  • Not because I’m worried I’ll succumb to temptation, but because watching other people rack up a line of tequila shots on the bar just doesn’t appeal anymore.
  • Sobriety is so much more than a decision about your physical health and emotional well-being—it has a huge effect on your social life.

I mentioned that boredom can unlock old behaviors. At this point, I’m therapized and program-focused enough that I can tell when I need other people to talk to, even though all I want to being sober sucks do is isolate and go dark. One of the first telltale signs for me is that I no longer see facial expressions.

why sobriety sucks

When invitations to hang out or communication stopped, I used it Halfway house as an excuse to feel sorry for myself. Part of my sobriety journey involves forgiving myself for being a truly atrocious and high-maintenance friend to some pretty amazing people. But then the other sides emerge — usually after a few drinks or in the absence of desperately needed ones. Sobriety has been one of the most humbling and illuminating experiences of my life.

  • All these competing parts have you morphing into a woman who irrationally obsesses over love interests she’s only just met.
  • In my drinking days, I was bitter.
  • That’s the trickier part of sobriety.
