Embrace The Suck: Dealing With The Uncomfortable Lessons Of Sobriety by Alicia Gilbert Medium

why sobriety sucks

A huge turning point for me was accepting that this is a big deal, and as much as I might want to brush it under the carpet, I can’t. I used to self-medicate with one of the most addictive drugs in the world, and I don’t do that anymore. I’ve gone from being one of the drunkest people at the party to being (frequently) the only sober person. Of course things are going to be different. After seven months of sobriety, I still avoid alcohol-heavy occasions as often as possible.

How Your Social Life Changes if You Give Up Drinking

You still have your “shit” to deal with and maybe that never ends, because well, life. It just looks a little different. I’m no longer a self-absorbed, sad woman drinking herself into oblivion every night.

  • Breweries like Athletic Brewing Company are pumping out NA craft beers at unprecedented rates.
  • You learn the hard lessons, And you evolve.
  • My entire world revolved around drinking and unleashing my feelings, no matter how irrational, onto well-intending people.

  • That means 10 percent of American adults account for nearly 60 percent of alcohol sales.
  • A bottle of Seedlip will run you $32.
  • Willenbring recommends having a quick phrase at the ready, such as, “I just find I feel better if I don’t drink.” Boom.

Who the fuck doesn’t want to escape this shitty world for the rest of their life’s for a few hours? It sucks to be stuck in your own mind 24/7 its torture. At several points during early sobriety, you’re probably going to get asked why you’re not drinking.

We wouldn’t be alive without the help of our favorite twelve step programs, but that doesn’t mean recovery doesn’t fully suck too. Listen as we discuss how sobriety and twelve step is portrayed in specific Drug rehabilitation media, books, movies and television. God grant me the serenity to rock the house down tonight. My entire world revolved around drinking and unleashing my feelings, no matter how irrational, onto well-intending people. I’d mix in some humor so it could seem like we were having “fun” but it didn’t change the fact that I was a negative person.

The process, however, isn’t always comfortable. And don’t miss past episodes of The Valley before Season 2 premieres later this year. But coming clean about his addiction has felt being sober sucks like a huge weight has been lifted from his shoulders. He didn’t necessarily believe he had an alcohol problem, per se, but since the booze went “hand in hand” with cocaine, Jax decided to do away with both.

  • The Valley cast member got candid on Bravo’s Hot Mic Podcast about his 20-plus years battling substance abuse.

  • It’s crazy, but telling your social circle you don’t drink is sometimes harder than not drinking in the first place.
  • Of course things are going to be different.
  • The alleged justification for this is that the process of making NA beverages is as arduous, if not more so, than making real alcohol.

The Downside of Sobriety: The 6 Things No One Tells You Might Happen If You Quit Drinking

It was sucking the life out of me. I’m sick of NA/AA/CA…I’m sick of the boredom, the loneliness, the bullshit talk the same faces, the same story been told over and over again. I’m sick of having nothing to do, I’m sick of been in my own mind, I’m sick of watching everyone enjoy themselves without a care in the world.

I thought that alcohol turned me into a fun person, and that without it I’d be a drag. Because sobriety is not always easy, and even if it’s improved most parts of my life, it’s also damaged a few. I think that anyone who is considering getting sober should know the full truth — not to be discouraged, but to be prepared. She (or he) is the one with the friends, the one who got the job, or was charming on that date. There are plenty of negative elements to getting sober too. And, although I absolutely believe that the positives outweigh the negatives, I also think that it’s essential that those of us who are sober talk about the bad parts too.
